Identify the size of your tyre
The exact dimensions of a tyre can be found on the sidewall printed mark. The graphic shows how to read properties and dimensions of the tyre:

SPEED INDEX:
The speed index indicates the maximum speed intended for the tyre. Up to this value, the manufacturer guarantees optimum operation with the appropriate tyre pressure. The maximum speed allowed for this vehicle is given in the vehicle owner's manual; this information can be used to select the appropriate speed index for the tyre. The speed index is the last mark on the sidewall of the tyre.
 
Load Index
Permissible maximum axle load per tyre in kg. To be found in the registration certificate or vehicle registration document or read directly from the tyre (two-digit number). It is permitted to fit a tyre with a higher load index.
 
Driving safety despite puncture
Runflat tyres are puncture-resistant tyres with reinforced sidewalls. This creates the so-called run-flat property. In the event of damage, this allows the vehicle to continue driving up to a distance of approx. 100 km (and even beyond depending on the product) at a maximum speed of 80 km/h, even if the pressure has been completely lost. Run-flat tyres even prevent the tyre rubber from jumping off the rim in the event of a loss of air pressure. A flat tyre is therefore still a flat tyre, but it loses some of its drama. Note: All run-flat tyres are marked with the symbol "RSC" (Runflat System Component) and may only be fitted in vehicles with a functioning air pressure control system!
 
Tyres with increased load capacity
Reinforced tyres are designed for higher loads than normal tyres. They can be identified by the designation 'RF' (reinforced) or also 'XL' or 'Extra Load'. They are used on vans, minibuses, off-road vehicles, etc. However, their mounting alone does not automatically result in higher load capacity but also requires a correspondingly higher air pressure. Furthermore, the load capacity index specified in the vehicle documents continues to apply.
 
Tyres with extra high load capacity
The "C" in the term C tyres stands for "commercial". These tyres are specially designed for commercial vehicles. These can be, for example, lighter trucks, delivery vans, flatbed trucks or panel vans. In other words: vehicles that have to move higher loads at a comparatively lower speed. The multi-ply reinforced C tyres are therefore even more load-bearing than reinforced tyres.
 
Mobility-optimised tyres
A tyre with a sealing layer on the opposite side of the tyre tread. In the event of a puncture (e.g. by a nail), this layer blocks any loss of air, even if the foreign body causing the puncture is still in the tyre. It is not necessary to stop or change the tyres immediately at the roadside.

Some other tyres have a low noise rating but quieter tyres are hard to find. Fulda are a German manufactured brand which puts them in a different league from the tyres made in 3rd world countries in terms of quality but they&#39;re also middle priced so you&#39;re getting a good tyre for a good price. I&#39;ve now had these all round on 3 cars and driven them over many years and 10s of thousands of miles and unless something better comes along I&#39;ll be sticking with them for the moment. Aside from being quiet I can&#39;t fault them on grip and wear although if they were less grippy or faster wearing I&#39;d be prepared to accept that in return for the quieter running. A lot of modern cars have wheels which are far too large and the Fulda Sport Control 2 helps to mitigate the noise created by wide low profile tyres making the car much nicer to drive.

I don&#39;t push the car so can&#39;t really comment on its braking abilities and I haven&#39;t taken enough statistics to confirm any fuel efficiency differences from the manufacturer-provided tyres. However I can confirm that the moment I drove away from the garage with the new tyres, it was noticeably quieter, enough that some in my family noticed. Since buying the tyres the main roads to work have been torn up and the current temporary roads are really quite bad and will probably tear up the tyres far faster than normal roads would... who knows how bad the noise in the car would have been with the old ones.

My car is the 90Hp 1.6TDI, CAYB engine and 5 speed transmission. I return on average 65mpg with these Fulda winter tyres on - no drop off from the summers [they were not good summers that came off it]. I drive on UK A and B roads in Shropshire, Herefordshire which are very agricultural with lots of pot holes. I killed a Fulda front tyre in 100 miles as I missed a huge pot hole at night at 50mph, the tyre did not burst but it egged - luckily I bought 6 tyres expecting a problem as the roads are horrendous and the tyres 40 series so too low profile for where I live. I drive to purposely avoid pot holes, but still catch them - the tyres and rims have survived unscathed since. I suspect they are slightly noisier than the summer but only on some road surfaces. Grip is very good in wet and predictable in the dry - not an ultimate grip tyre BUT here is my point, it appears to me on a very low power and lightweight car [1,200kg] to provide very consistent grip regardless of road surface which is what I want. Great grip in wet mud and standing water also. I would recommend for a good general tyre. I&#39;ve done about 5,000 miles on them so far and wear even at 10degC is fine.

Although a &quot;Winter&quot; tyre they are a good all rounder mud &amp; snow. Tyre wear is obviously not as good &quot;summer&quot; tyres and other tyres may be better for high speed autoroute driving.
